Employment
Referring to Dover as a city that has "displayed incredible employment potential, a top-notch quality of life, outstanding educational standards, opportunities for companies interested in relocating," Employment Review magazine named Dover, Delaware, as one of the best small cities in which to live and work,
Dover’s largest employer is also Delaware’s—the Delaware state government. Most of the state’s bureaucratic functions are located in and around Dover. Because Dover is one of the state’s fastest growing areas with a low cost of living and high quality of life, the Kent County government is another major employer in the area. Apart from the state and county governments, Dover’s other significant employers include the Dover Air Force Base, the Playtex Corporation and ILC Dover which produces fabrics for military and aerospace use.
A recent study conducted by the Delaware Economic Development Office shows Dover and Kent County to be positioned favorably for both company and job growth. Over the past 30 years, the county's labor force has more than doubled while the number of new companies has increased by over 10% in the last decade.
Delaware’s economic strategy includes providing high quality jobs throughout the state including two technology initiatives, a Technology Business Incubator at Delaware State University and the Garrison Oak Technology Park. Both movements are designed to add to Dover’s fine reputation as one of the nation’s best places to live and work.
